Did you know that the number two cause of home fires is heating equipment, according to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA)? That’s right, from 2012 - 2016 heating equipment led to 52,050 fires, 490 deaths and roughly $1 billion in property damage. Alarming, right? Well, as you keep your home warm and cozy this winter, keep the following heating-related fire prevention tips in mind:
Heating Fire Stats & Facts
Space heaters account for roughly 70% of all winter fires which are usually caused by circuit overloads. Electrical and contact fires are common, but these devices can also cause electric shock as well as burns.
Fireplaces are another common source of winter fires due to their high burning temperature and flying embers. Remember to clean and maintain both the fireplace and the chimney throughout the season.
Malfunctioning furnaces can lead to combustible natural gas leaks. Natural gas is extremely flammable and can even cause explosions while leaks can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
Radiators can be prone to overheating and can cause thermal injuries. Additionally, placing flammable items near or on top of the radiator can cause a fire in a matter of seconds.
What You Can Do To Prevent Heating Fires
Consider upgrading a central heating system rather than using the above alternatives as primary heat sources this winter. Central heating systems are much safer as they don’t generally produce exposed flames and they’re not usually located in high-traffic areas of the house where people, pets or flammable objects might come in contact with the equipment.
Remember to test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at least twice a year. If they are broken or are malfunctioning, replace them right away.
Get your chimney cleaned by a professional at least once a year and keep a fireplace screen or doors in place while the fire is burning.
Always keep flammable items at least three feet away from all heating equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, gasoline, clothing, paper items, wood, paid, bedding and drapery.
If you must use a supplemental heating appliance, only plug one in at a time and plug it directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord.
Always turn heaters off before leaving the house or going to bed.
